Production Log: Week 5

What have you contributed to this week?

This week, myself and Farhana started filming with our cast members, Damanjyot and Bilal. On the 16th Sunday, we started our filming outside the Barley Lane Mental Health Home, and because they had a lot of pathways, we decided to use that instead of using the high roads and streets. We managed to get all our filming done on that day. On the Wednesday we went to London and filmed on the London Bridge, outside a restaurant, around St. Paul's Cathedral, and down near the River Thames. Although some of the places we used wasn't our original ideas to shoot, we completed all the shots that we needed in a variety of locations in London. On the Friday, Damanjyot and Farhana came to my house so we could film all the house shots in which we completed.

Damanjyot and Bilal at St.Paul's Cathedral.

How does this fit with the production schedule/job roles/overall ideas for the project?

When we start filming, we have to make sure our production schedule is not disturbed, and having one helps us to not make plans on that day of shooting or to get into any situations where it could lead to us not shooting on the original day, making it a guide for us. Starting the filming means the job roles become serious and we have to be responsible to make sure everything looks good and is completed. Also, in the process of shooting, we come up with a lot more ideas that we could do for our overall project because it motivates us to think more.

Were there any problems?

Yes there were problems. One being that there was rain on the Saturday on which we were originally going to shoot outside Barley Lane Mental Health Home and the rain was very heavy so we knew we couldn't and didn't want to film. Another problem was that Damanjyot couldn't film on the Thursday at my house because she had a situation to do with home so we had to think of a date where we could film which was hard as everyone had plans for other days.

How did you/will you overcome them?

We overcame the problems eventually. I often checked the weather forecast on the internet on my phone to see if it would rain for the whole week. We went to Barley Lane Mental Health Home on the Sunday because as you can see on the picture on the right, it was suppose to be sunny on that day, so we went and it was sunny all day which was a great outcome for us. I also checked on the Wednesday for the London outing to see if it would rain and it claimed that it would be sunny all day, and it was. For the house situation, I originally planned to go shopping early in the morning, but I persuaded my mum to let me and my partner and cast member to film in the morning for at least an hour and a half and she let us and so we completed all our filming that was supposed to be done on the Thursday, on Friday.

What are the plans for the following week?

For the following week, me and my partner still need to finish off shoots. We have to do the green screen of Damanjyot performing in a mental home, and the scene where Damanjyot opens the door to where Bilal is and we have a few shoots where she is lip-syncing at him and intimidating him, and so we are planning to do this in a room in the school and hopefully finish all our shots for the following week.

Shooting Production Schedule

Production Log: Week 4

What have you contributed to this week?

This week, we finished all of the pre-production paper work, including the emails we sent for permission to film in places, such as the mental home in Barley Lane and London Bridge. This then allowed us to start our filming. On the Thursday lesson, we started filming in the media lesson with our main actress, Damanjyot, after our teacher had checked to see all our paper work was up to a good standard to allow us to start shooting. We filmed in the park and got a few shots that we quite liked.

How does this fit with the production schedule/job roles/overall ideas for the project?

Pre-production work helps us to film our music video, and knowing we'll be able to shoot in particular locations to suit our story-line for the video as we have received permission to do so. Also, pre-production work allows us to know what risks can come with shooting a music video in locations and how we can overcome them.

Were there any problems?

We hardly came into contact regarding problems, apart from the issue with permission. The person whom has control over the emails about the Barley Lane mental health home had given us a reply in which we replied back, and then they got back to us asking for a way to contact us via an actual phone call, so we asked our teacher if he could use his contact details to get back to Kerry, who manages the emails. Our teacher was happy to give his number to the manager which resolved what could have been a slight problem.

How did you/will you overcome them?

The issue wasn't a massive problem to deal with as our teacher kindly dealt with the situation of giving out his phone number to Kerry. At the moment there are no other problems we can encounter and we're hoping that we will be given a positive permission to film at the location that we had chosen.

What are the plans for the following week?

The following week is our February half term holiday, which will consist of a lot of filming to be completed. Having a weeks holiday is a bonus as we are not restricted with time as we can film when we want and also, we are not time limited. Myself and Farhana have discussed with our crew, Damanjyot and Bilal, and they are both free throughout the week which means we won't have to remain worried or concerned as they are available. Our aim is to finish a majority of the filming before we come back to school which is on the 25th of February, and to leave the green screen for when we come back to school.

Job Roles and Responsibilities

Director and Production Manager: Ellie

Me and Farhana have decided that the director and production manager should be me. This is solely because my idea for the music video had been chosen and I have a better understanding of what the overall music video should be reviewed as. Farhana also believes that I will take on the responsibility and role in a  much advanced way as I have also done this in previous work. Another reason why we decided that I should take up this role is because I had also mentioned this in my music video pitch that I would prefer to take up the role as the director, as I am aware of what I want the overall completed music video to be presented as.

Camera Operator: Farhana

Farhana will be doing the job of being the camera operator. Me and Farhana have decided that from previous work which we both have done together, Farhana had handled the camera well and I also agreed that Farhana should take responsibility over the camera job. We had a mutual discussion and decided that Farhana's camera skills have advanced more since the last work which we both contributed towards.

Editors: Ellie & Farhana

Me and Farhana have discussed that we should both take up the responsibility of being the editors. We decided that it would be fair to share out the roles as we have both already taken up job roles which we will be doing individually. We also decided that the overall editing skills would be more advanced as both our ideas would come together. Me and Farhana also know what types of editing skills we want to use so we can help each other when editing. When me and Farhana come to finalizing the music video, we both will be content that we have equally divided the roles so that neither of us has been burdened with the roles and how we both have put in equal amount of effort towards the final music video.

Cast:

Main Female Actress: Damanjyot
Main Male Actor: Bilal
Special Appearance: Ellie & Farhana

Location Reccies

Barley Lane Mental Health Hospital - my partner and I have decided to film outside the Barley Lane mental health hospital, as it connects to the storyline of our music video. In order for us to show our audience our main character/actress's role, we have made her come out from this place, showing how she has escaped from this place. We decided to film in this particular location as presented on a sign board, it says 'Psychological Services', this will enable us to unveil to the audience that we have explored and presented our music video to be as realistic as mentioned, and how we wanted to portray our story line through the music video.

Chadwell Heath High Road/Side Roads - me and my partner have decided to film around this area as we wanted to show our main actress be as crazy as possible by having her walking down streets acting strange, and how she is different from everyone else. We decided this location would be suitable as it's usually not as busy which is a bonus as we won't be interrupted by cars and people, and we won't be in their way either. We have also chosen side roads which are quiet and spacious as this will allow us to film comfortably and freely as much as we want because it's a designated area.

London Bridge and Train Station - my partner and I have decided to film on the London Bridge, or, and around the location as we thought it was be a nice scenery to use for a romantic/date relationship feel. We have also decided that this location will be appealing to the audience, and to show how we have gone out of our way to film in different locations and so we thought London would be a great way to show that. On our train journey there, we have decided that we will film a scene on the train to show the journey of the couple and how they spend their time together. This is a positive for us as we can film at two different locations on the same day and it won't be a burden on us.

Green Screen - me and my partner have decided to use green screen of the inside of a mental health home for the chorus parts. This will be shot as the performance scene of our music video, and how we show the portrayal of our character through our main actress. We will have her lip-syncing throughout the performance scenes, and put on view of how she behaves abnormally.

Ellie's House - my partner and I have chosen Ellie's house as the location for the house scenes. We have chosen Ellie's house as it's accessible for us all, and our cast are also aware of where Ellie's house is and how to get there. We have also got permission from Ellie's mum to film around the house so she is comfortable and aware of what we are doing. We will be using the hallway for when she comes in, stairs for when she goes up/down them, Ellie's bedroom as our main actress's bedroom, and the bathroom for when she burns the image, and also a box room for the scenes where Bilal will be held captured.

Risk Assessment Sheets

Call Sheets

Production Log: Week 3

What have you contributed to this week?

For this week, we continued on finalising our shooting script. Our teacher decided to look at everyone's shooting script and gave us feedback in which we were happy about as our teacher liked our ideas for each section of the song. Although, he did mention that we should consider using performance for the chorus section on the green screen of a mental home as he thought it would make our music video flow better. We completed the shooting script on Wednesday and uploaded it. On the Thursday lesson, we started on filling in a February calender which we jotted down the shots that we will be doing on some of the days in the month which we finished and printed off a few to keep and to give to our cast, Damanjyot and Bilal. Just before the lesson ended, we managed to fill in one call sheet which held info such as the shots we are doing, our emails, props we'll be needing, etc. and on the Friday, we went back on the calendar and changed the dates as we realised we couldn't start filming until we've finished all the tasks. So, we finalised the calender, and then went onto the call sheets which we finished. Also, we started on the risks assessment sheet and managed to do all apart from one or two.

How does this fit in with the production schedule/job roles/overall ideas of the project?

This allows us a completed shooting script when we shoot our music video. We'll be able to go to different locations and know what we want to do and where. Also, we will be able to receive roles to our cast as we will be aware of what we want from them. Pre-production work helps us a big amount as we can work out exact times, the risks, and locations that are going to take place.

Were there any problems?

We considered changing the chorus scenes into performance scenes as we wanted our music video to flow and because a teacher suggested it, we though it would be for the best. For the pre-production work, the only problem we faced was the February calender sheet as we had to change some of the dates of where we were going to start shooting as me and Farhana done the shots too early because we have to start shooting when we've finished all the coursework set.

How will you/did you overcome them?

We overcame the problems by agreeing with the teacher and changing the shooting script. We changed the February calender dates to later dates.

What are the plans for the following week?

We will be carrying on doing pre-production sheets and if we're done, we might be able to start filming. Before then, we will have to ask for permission whether to use green screen as that is the only equipment we will probably be using first for shooting our music video.

Production Log: Week 2

What have you contributed to this week?

This week was concentrating on getting our shooting script done. As it's time consuming we planned before hand when we were free to do it in our free's than just doing it in class. The first day of starting our shooting scripts we ended up doing 8 shots, realising that it had taken us a whole lesson to just do 8 shots we knew we had to find time to get 100 shots. My teacher suggested that we should do some at home by ourselves but me and Farhana knew we wanted to do it together because it's easier that way and we get to hear each others opinions and ideas on the shooting script. On a Tuesday me and Farhana both had period's 1-4 off, so we thought it would be a good opportunity to get most of it done then. We at least got up to 35 shots which was a big jump to the previous shots we got up to. I wasn't in the next day so Farhana did some shots in lesson and she got up to 50. She then sent me the shooting script via email and the next day on my free I done my share on doing some shots and I got up to 70. On the Friday, me and Farhana made some slight changes and got up to 101 shots in total which was very successful for us.

How does this fit in with the production schedule/job roles/overall ideas of the project?

This helps us on shooting our music video as every shot is detailed enough to know what is going to happen in each scene. Also, it will help us on deciding what locations/areas we are going to be using to shoot at and during which time, allowing us to know what are cast will be doing and as well how they will be contributing towards our music video.

Were there any problems?

Apart from the fact that I wasn't in and couldn't help not being in because I was un well, there were no problems as we stepped up and managed to do 101 shots by finding time to do it in our frees, and by doing some shots separately when I had my own time when I weren't in the lesson.

How did you/will you overcome them?

It would have been easier for Farhana if I was in as we both share ideas and use them both towards the planning of our music video, but she managed to do some shots in the lesson, and when I was in the next day, I managed to do my share of shots to make it fair.

What are the plans for the following week?

The deadline for the shooting script is on Wednesday so we will have more time to finish our shooting script and finalising on the following week. Also, we will be starting other tasks such as filling in call sheets which holds information such as the shots we are doing, our emails and props we'll be needing etc., a February calender to jot down the shots we will be doing in the month, and a risk assessment sheet where we have to note down any risks that will come in contact while shooting our music video.
